Benefits and Costs of Prevention and Early Intervention Programs for Youth by Steve Aos, Roxanne Lieb, Jim Mayfield, Marna Miller, and Annie Pennucci for the Washington State Institute for Public Policy (September 2004)

This report describes findings and analysis regarding the cost-effectiveness of research-based prevention and early intervention programs for youth with a demonstrated ability to achieve 7 outcomes:

  1. Reduce crime;
  2. Lower substance abuse;
  3. Improve educational outcomes such as test scores and graduation rates;
  4. Decrease teen pregnancy;
  5. Reduce teen suicide attempts;
  6. Lower child abuse or neglect; and
  7. Reduce domestic violence.

Includes a detailed chart comparing programs' measured benefits and costs per youth. Lists brief descriptions for each program in the review.
