Summary

Trafficking in Persons: Global Patterns by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (April 2006)

This report attempts to increase understanding about the depth, breadth, and scope of trafficking in persons in hopes of promoting more coordinated and efficient responses to counter trafficking. (10)

  • Encourages all countries to improve on reducing demand, targeting the criminals (traffickers), and protecting trafficking victims
  • Makes specific recommendations to member states
  • Information contained in this report is taken from the UNODC Database on Human Trafficking Trends from the period of 1996-2003. The data doesn’t include actual numbers of victims “nor does it provide statistics directly reflecting the severity of human trafficking around the globe.” (45)
  • Includes case studies to punctuate depth and complexity of human trafficking from different countries and contexts
